Iolite’s school was tucked into a fork of the Little River and uncommonly difficult to get to. As a result, I seldom saw my youngest sister.

Some assumed my celebrity status prompted me to avoid her, but no. Although Iolite suffered from a disease that made many people uncomfortable, she never made me feel that way. Her gentle nature was tempered with a wisdom that made her seem almost elderly, and with a childlike love of adventure. I often wished she and I were closer.

The trip back from Zur took us near her school, so I sent the others ahead, thinking I’d surprise her and we’d spend the night visiting. The last letter from my mother told me Iolite had been slow to finish her studies and wouldn’t be home until well into Heli. So I rode onto campus to find her.

“Again? What is this?” a young woman who shared Iolite’s lodging greeted me at the door. “Yesterday we sent away your parents’ messenger. He wouldn’t believe us that Iolite left in the spring, after finishing early. He searched our house, and then the entire campus.”

“What? That’s impossible. She told my parents …”

The girl twiddled a cloth in her hands and now she began wrapping and unwrapping it around her fingers as she avoided my eyes. “I’ve no idea why she lied to her family. I don’t know what to tell you.” She looked up. “I promise you, she’s gone and has been for a while.”

“But … don’t you have any idea where?”

Her eyes went back to the cloth in her hands. Twist and wrap. Twist and wrap.

“No. No idea at all.”

“Okay. Thank you for your time.”
